Adopting a Biewer

So, you are thinking about adopting a Biewer.

Hopefully, you will either already be very familiar with the breed or are willing to do some homework.  The Biewer is a special little companion breed with a trusting and happy nature.

Given the small stature of the Biewer, there are many special things we must do to protect them from harm.  As with all small breeds they can react quickly, and adversely, to changes in their environment such as temperature fluctuations, dietary changes or even sudden noise.  As owners of Biewers, it is our responsibility to be aware of any changes which may affect the well-being of our dog/s.

There are also health considerations of which you should be aware.

We encourage you to join a Biewer forum such as the Biewer Fanciers Forum online to learn more about the Biewer before making a final decision on whether or not the Biewer is right for you and your household.

Better yet is to have a mentor...a reputable Biewer enthusiast can be invaluable in helping you along the way to educate yourself about the Biewer.  Just be honest and up-front with such a person as many may be breeders that your intent is to adopt.

Given the relative rarity of the breed in North America, we fortunately do not have Biewers come up for adoption frequently.  Also, given the new-found demand for the breed, we do have a waiting list for receiving a dog.

We do not place dogs strictly by how long someone has been on a waiting list.  Our Biewers are as individual as our Owners.  We work to match the Biewers with the very best home for their needs.

  • The Adoption Process

Once you have decided that you want to adopt a Biewer, complete the Adoption Application and submit it to general@BiewerRescue.com

The Adoption Committee will then meet to discuss the merits of your application.  You will be notified of the outcome of the meeting and if there are any Biewers which may fit your circumstances.

Be patient!  We do not meet on a daily basis unless there is a crisis which requires us to do so.

We will conduct a home visit to review the surroundings in which your Biewer will be kept and discuss various aspects of care for your Biewer.

Have Questions?

The following are basic requirements when owning any dog, and specifically the Biewer.

  1. The Biewer is not an “outside” dog and must be a member of the family and household.  Until the dog has become fully acquainted with its new environment, a safe haven must be provided for him/her to be when left alone, or when a needed break from the family is evident.  A wire crate or play pen lined with newspapers, and large enough to hold a bed at one end with food and water bowls at the other end is ideal.  Eventually, when fully adjusted, the dog can be left in a kitchen quite safely, or allowed to roam the house during the owners’ absence.
  2. A completely fenced yard or area is preferred, and the dog can never be left outside alone for any period of time.  It is far too easy for a small dog to be taken from the owner’s yard.  The Biewer enjoys playing with toys, chasing balls, and is usually very active.  These sports can be continued in-doors as well as in a fenced yard.  A small dog can easily be paper trained to relieve himself/herself making the dog ideal for apartment dwellers, and gives an alternative area in rain, snow, or excessively hot weather.  Under no circumstances is a Biewer to be tied outside or allowed to run loose, and he/she should always wear identifying tags or be micro chipped.
  3. NEVER leave a dog alone in a car regardless of weather.  It is also strongly advised that a dog be harnessed to a seat belt or in a crate when traveling by car. Never allow a dog to travel with its head out of the window of a moving vehicle because eye infections, injuries, or blindness can.
  4. Some dogs do better in a single dog family, others mix well with other dogs both large and small.  The BBCAR organization will conduct a full evaluation of the dog, and place it in an appropriate home for the personality of the individual dog.  The ownership and responsibility for the adopted dog belongs solely to the adoptive owners.  However, if at any time, for any reason whatsoever, the adopters cannot keep the dog, the dog MUST be returned to the BBCAR for appropriate reassessment and placement in a new home.
  5. Three visitations to the new owner’s home may take place.  The first prior to placement to ensure the placement home meets the BBCAR requirements; the second announced and scheduled; and the third unannounced to ensure that the placement is to the benefit and welfare of both the dog and the new owner.
  6. The Biewer Breed Club of America Inc., Biewer Rescue, its officers, board and members shall not be held responsible for any bodily injury or property damage as is spelled out in the adoption agreement.  In addition, the Biewer Breed Club of America Inc., Biewer Rescue makes no representations or warranties regarding the temperament or physical condition of any adoptive Biewer.  All warranties, including implied warranties of merchantability and fitness, and fitness for a particular purpose, where they are applicable, are hereby specifically disclaimed.
  7. The Biewer Rescue will NOT provide registration paperwork on the dog, names of the breeder(s) or previous owner(s), or pedigree information.
  8. The adopted Biewer will require bathing weekly, and groomed daily.  The dog may be professionally clipped in a puppy clip or similar to provide the pet owner ease of care.  Any dog that is found to be unkempt, or uncared for may be removed from adoptive owner at the discretion of the BBCAR organization.
